「アナタニサマ」とは…。
古い港町、小樽に昔から伝わる文学の妖精。真冬の厳寒の夜、現れるといわれています。薄明りの街灯の下、毛むくじゃらの小さなアナタニサマは、「アナタニ」と、一冊の本を差し出します。受け取って本のページを開いたが最後、読むのが止まらなくなり、その場で凍死してしまいます。
身を守るための呪文は「ヨミマシタ ヨミマシタ モウヨミマシタ…」。すると妖精はたちどころに消え去りますが、死なずに助かった人は皆、生涯、嘘をついたことを後悔し、永遠に失われたその本の幻を追い求め、文学の果てしない魅力に取りつかれることになるといいます…。
Anatanisama, the story.
“Anatanisama”, a book fairy, is said to show up on the street in Otaru at night in the middle of winter. First wittnessed about 100 years ago, it would offer you a book and say, “To you (Anata Ni).” If you receive the book and start reading, you cannot stop because the book is so fascinating, and will freeze to death.
The only way to survive is to say, “I’ve already read it.” Then, Anatanisama will disappear right away.
However, it is also said that those who survived would regret telling a lie for the rest of their lives, craving to know what the book was about, and thus, captivated by the magic of literature.
２月２日は「アナタニサマの日」。
文献記録で確認できる範囲では、アナタニサマが小樽に初めて現れたのは大正８年（1919） １月19日。１月26日付「日日小樽」に、凍死した男と「アナタニサマなる怪物の噂」に関する記事が掲載されています。
その後目撃証言が相次ぎ、別の資料には、同年２月２日に色内でアナタニサマに遭遇した女性が「モウヨミマシタ」と答えると 消えて命拾いをしたという逸話が、アナタニサマの絵姿とともに残されています。
そして小樽ではいつからか、２月２日に大切な人に本を贈るとその人はアナタニサマから守られるという風説が広まりました。読み始めたら止まらないどんなに面白い本も、極寒の中で読み始めさえしなければ命を落とすことはありません。
「た～んと本読んで アナタニサマに モウヨミマシタ ゆうちゃろう」
当時の小樽の子どもたちのあいだでは、そんな唄までも流行ったそうです。
今年の２月２日、あなたも大切なだれかに、心から読んでほしい本を贈りませんか。小さな文学の妖精がその人の前に現れても、安心して呪文を唱えられるように。

Give your favorite book to your loved one.
According to an old story, a woman barely escaped death when she was offered a book by Anatanisama, by instinctively saying “I’ve alrady read it” .
That happened on February 2nd in 1919, and since then, people in Otaru is said to have started giving, on that particular day, their loved one their favorite book so that they could say, “I’ve already read it,” when they ran into Anatanisama.
Let’s give a book on February 2nd and tell your loved one the spell; “I’ve already read it!”
